He gave me several signed copies of books he had written, which revealed his being both a mystic and a realist as well as an inventor and businessman. Beyond that, he was a humanist, loved and greatly admired by his extended family of employees at the main plant located in Stratford, Connecticut. My idea was to create a sculpture that would go beyond the traditional portrait, creating a collage of related images. I began with a low relief image of the VS-300, a precarious open frame airship, piloted en plein aire by the designer himself wearing his ever-present fedora and plenty of faith. Located beneath the relief of the helicopter reads the following commemorative information: First flight of the VS-300 helicopter, designed and piloted by Igor Sikorsky--September 14, 1939.Following the commemorative information is a quote that I selected from the writings of Igor Sikorsky: The work of the individual still remains the spark that moves mankind ahead.Positioned in front of the relief is a full figure of Igor Sikorsky. I sought to capture his gentle formality with a balanced, symmetrical stance. All those fortunate to have met Igor Sikorsky will recognize his courtly demeanor as he glances upward toward the sky. This sculpture was cast at the Cavalier Foundry in Bridgeport, Connecticut, in 1989. The sculpture is signed, copyright 1989. It is the only casting produced and the molds have been destroyed.

The recent boom in DSLR sales has seen all the major manufacturers adding bulked-up or stripped-down entry level models, repositioning their offerings to make sure that anyone willing to put up with the size and weight of a DSLR will look at one of their models. The whole thing has often left existing DSLR owners a little lost - 'why isn't there a direct replacement for my camera?' - but has undoubtedly meant there are many more attractive, accessible cameras on the market just waiting to entice first-time DSLR owners.

And its into this maelstrom of DSLR proliferation that Nikon launches its latest baby DSLR, the D5000. Nikon's recent strategy of inexpensive, simplified models caused a lot of confusion. The D40, D40X and D60 removed the autofocus motor, making them smaller and less expensive but limiting the choice of lenses that could be autofocused. Despite this oft-criticised move, the cameras sold very well, prompting the major third-party lens makers to create versions of their popular budget lenses that would focus on these baby Nikons. However, it appears Nikon has again decided that simply replacing models isn't the best way to address the market. So here we have a camera that genuinely seems to sit above the D60 (rather than continuing in parallel until the stock runs out), and below the D90. Like the baby Nikons, the D5000 doesn't have an autofocus motor built into the body but does gain a tilt-and-swivel LCD.

The BIONZ image processor delivers the high resolution and fast performance you expect from a Sony digital camera. Fast processing enables Sweep Panorama to create the image in camera in seconds, clear images in low light settings, and layering one image over another to create a photo that looks just like what you see with your eyes.

Sweep Panorama mode

Reach beyond the traditional wide angle lens, and capture more breathtaking shots with Sweep Panorama Mode. Simply press the shutter button and sweep the camera in the desired direction and the camera continuously shoots at a high speed, then seamlessly stitches the images together with automatic position adjustment to create one stunning panoramic image. Available in wide and ultra-wide options, the camera can take panoramic shots of up to 256 degrees, which goes well beyond the limits of peripheral vision, even capturing areas somewhat behind you. Now capturing wide landscapes is as easy as press and sweep.

Optical SteadyShot image stabilization

Optical SteadyShot image stabilization uses a built-in gyro sensor to detect camera shake and automatically shifts the lens to help prevent blur without sacrificing image quality.

Intelligent Scene Recognition (iSCN) Mode

Intelligent Scene Recognition (iSCN) Mode automatically detects eight different types of scenes and, within just 1/30th of a second, selects the appropriate camera settings: Backlight, Backlight Portrait, Twilight, Twilight Portrait, Twilight using a tripod, Portrait, Landscape, and Macro. iSCN has two modes: Auto and Advanced. In Auto Mode, the camera takes a single shot using the optimal settings. In Advanced Mode, the camera takes a photo with the optimal settings and, if in difficult lighting (low light or back light) immediately takes a second photo with another optimized setting so you can choose which to keep.

Face Detection technology

Sony improved Face Detection technology can automatically distinguish between children and adults. Face Detection technology detects up to eight individual faces and adjusts focus, exposure, and white balance to help deliver crisp, properly lit images of family and friends.

Dynamic Range Optimizer Standard and Plus

Dynamic Range Optimizer (DRO) Standard and Plus uses a sophisticated algorithm to help recover shadows and highlights. The result is more natural images with clearer details that more closely match what your naked eye sees. DRO is particularly effective when shooting backlit portraits or any scene with a dramatic contrast between background and foreground lighting. DRO Plus allows for even greater optimization by analyzing each region of an image and optimizing each area individually.
